Personal Style – ‘Block the Hate,’ ‘On Fire’

By Benjamin Joe

Personal Style’s “Block the Hate” starts off with a few resounding chords starting up, then quickly builds into a fast, hard hitting almost pounding lyrical ride. Much like a chainsaw or a man chanting alone in the midst of a crowd, the song’s rhythm is complimented by its message.

“When all you know is what you read/and all you read comes from a filtered feed/Accept your role as the news curator/Make the Internet feel a little bit safer”

Personal Style is made up of Stephen Floyd on bass and vocals, Bryan Johnson on guitar and vocals and Evan Wachowski on drums. The trio began in 2019, according to music press, after Floyd met Johnson and agreed to open for him with his previous band, Mallwalkers. At the same time, Floyd was talking to Wachowski, socially, about music, comics and graphic design at Gutterpop Comics.

The time came when the three made plans to play music and things just synced up.

“On Fire” and “Block the Hate” are two almost Ramone-esq numbers with influences of post-punk within the harmony. As “On Fire” ends, with the lyric – “I think there’s something on the radio,” – the gut reaction is to try to find more of the same.
